Alabama Needs A New Generation of Nurses

In a 2023 survey, The Alabama Board of Nursing found the state is currently short by more than 7,000 nurses, and based on current trends, the shortage will double to 14,000 in the next three years. That survey predicts 39,000 Alabama nurses are likely to retire or leave the profession by 2028. Who will fill their shoes? Who will become the new generation of nurses?

The Baptist Health Foundation lives on the front lines of healthcare. With a wide view on the entire landscape, we are in a unique position to identify and address the most pressing needs across the field. In pursuit of our mission, we’ve identified Central Alabama’s nursing shortage as the most urgent crisis in the patient care continuum.

The Foundation believes the solution begins in nursing school.

Universities and colleges across Alabama have accepted students who drop out or never start a degree program due to costs. To break down this financial barrier and inspire a New Generation of Nurses, the Baptist Health Foundation, in partnership with Baptist Health Inc. has established the New Generation of Nurses (NGN) Fund.

We need your help.
